STDs Rising in Florida, Hillsborough County
Hillsborough County Alone has Registered More Than 7,100 Cases of the Sexually Transmitted Disease, Chlamydia.
A frightening number of sexually transmitted diseases in the state of Florida has been reported by the Health Department. Reports that have been out state that there is a rise in Chlamydia.
The number rose from 42,000 in 2003 to 77,000 cases in 2012
Hillsborough County alone has registered more than 7,100 cases of Chlamydia. This disease is sexually transmitted but can be cured easily. However, if left untreated, it can leave a woman infertile and unable to conceive. Sexually transmitted diseases, like Gonorrhea and Syphilis, are also on the rise - the highest seen in 22 years.
Sex education provided in schools are not uniform and have a wide difference in their content. Moreover, proper time is not allotted to educate the students, and most of the children totally miss out on this important subject, revealed a study by the University of Florida. According to the study, Florida stands second in the USA in the number of people infected with HIV.
Clinic owner Dr Jose de la Rocha said that this might be due to the lack of sexual education in schools. Speaking to children about sex is considered a taboo by parents. They are uncomfortable talking to their children about the dangers of getting into a sexual relationship. Schools too are staying away from the controversy of sexual education.
"I think education has a lot to do with it. Number one, I think the schools are not teaching it--especially the youngsters; and secondly the family dynamic has changed. I mean they are more sexually active," said de la Rocha.
He treats hundreds of patient's everyday in his clinic First Care on Waters in Tampa. According to him, it has been explosive within the last two years.
Sexually transmitted diseases do not have any borders, they cross socio-economic status, from the very rich to the very poor and young to the old. These diseases are very easily preventable.
According to him, people should realise that this is a problem that needs to be addressed to keep it in check because it is easily passed on from one person to another. These diseases are unstoppable, unless there is a proper plan in place to keep it in check.
The best way of prevention of sexually transmitted diseases is to educate children and not to avoid getting involved in risky sexual behaviour.
