Kate was radiant in a shimmering gown, her hair was half-up and down making a scar slightly visible on her left temple.

The palace reveals the story behind the Duchess of Cambridge's scar and confirms that the scar was due to a surgery the Duchess had gone under when she was a child.

"The scar was related to a childhood operation," a spokesperson of the Duchess said at St. Jame's Palace. However, the palace refused to discuss further matters saying it was a private matter. Senior royal sources also confirmed that it was a 'very serious operation.'

"I really doubt it was any serious medical condition and I would say it is as a result of an arteriovenous malformation - a birthmark - being removed," said John Scurr, a consultant surgeon at the Lister Hospital in London.

Her husband Prince William also has a zig zag scar on his forehead which he refers to as a "Harry Potter" scar. It was caused by an accident when he was hit by a golf club at age 13.

As part of the Royal Family, the Duchess of Cambridge conducted her first solo engagement to stand for her father-in-law, Prince Charles. The Prince had to make a sudden trip to Riyadh to extend his condolences to the Saudi Royal Family for the death of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. So his daughter-in-law was called to step in.

"The Duchess of Cambridge was delighted to be able to step in for her father-in-law, The Prince of Wales," a spokesman at St. Jame's Palace said.

At a 45-minute champagne reception in the Garden Room, Kate chatted up about the charity's work before leading the guests to the dining room for dinner.

"We were delighted that the Duchess was able to step in at such short notice after our founder was unexpectedly called away. The Duchess hosted a very special evening with absolute professionalism and charm. You would never know it was her first solo engagement. It was as if she had been trained by the Prince of Wales. She was completely natural, professional and charmed everyone. She spoke to every single guest and was genuinely interested, and interested in continuing to help," said Robin Boles, the charity's chief executive.
