‘Suicide Squad’ Casting Update: Viola Davis A ‘Fantastic Choice’ As Amanda Waller
There were three choices for the role of Amanda Waller in "Suicide Squad." Oprah Winfrey, Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis were among the contenders. However, according to a recent report Davis has been chosen among the rest.
Sources told Latino Review that Viola Davis has been cast to portray the former Congressional aid and head of the "Suicide Squad." The only thing possibly keeping the Oscar nominee from the role is her busy schedule filming her hit show "How To Get Away With Murder." However, per Screenrant it's less likely that Davis will pass the chance to be DC's villain in David Ayer's film, since the show only has 15 episodes left to shoot for its first season. It would supposedly be a small feat for her to juggle her TV and movie career simultaneously.
Producers have yet to confirm the actress' casting. But if made official she will join other stars already announced for the movie; Jared Leto as The Joker, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Carla Delevingne as Enchantress. While the studio has yet to formally announce the actress' involvement, Cinemablend's Adam Holmes thinks Davis would make a "fantastic choice" as Amanda Waller since "she's given enough powerful performances that she'll play the tough-as-nails government operative quite well." Portraying the character would reportedly be an "intense role" but Holmes is certain the actress "is up to the challenge."
"This is a woman who will take any action, however cruel it may be, to protect her country. This can be anything from detonating a bomb inside one of her operatives if they try to escape or ordering hostile action towards a superhero that gets in her way," he said.
In the DC comics Amanda Waller is described as a "ruthless woman" who runs a team of incarcerated super-villains known as the "Suicide Squad." In The New Earth version of the character the villain is characterised by her non-threatening physical appearance; her being a large, older woman. However, her Prime Earth debut from 2011 up to present features a thinner and much younger woman, which fans supposedly didn't really appreciate. Thus, when casting choices for the character involved Spencer, Winfrey and Davis fans were believed to be delighted knowing that the original Waller could be portrayed in the movie.
