‘Suicide Squad': Jared Leto talks Joker's character, reveals 'different' take on villain
Jared Leto has finally broken his silence about his Joker character months after it was announced that he would play the role in “Suicide Squad.” In a recent interview, the actor talked about his preparation in taking on the villain character, and he also teased fans on what they can expect to see from DC’s Clown Prince of Crime.
In an interview with Empire Magazine (via Comic Book Movie), Leto shared how he took on the character of the Joker so much that he “took a pretty deep dive.” However, the method actor claimed he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn't imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole,” he said.
In the same interview, the 30 Second To Mars frontman also hinted on what fans can see from the Joker in “Suicide Squad.” According to Leto, part of his preparation for the villain character was reading on books about shamans and listening to 1920s gospel music. He jokingly described his version of DC’s Clown Prince of Crime as a much older man.
"I always get the sense that The Joker may be much older than people think,” Leto told Empire Magazine.
There have been reports claiming that Leto’s version of the Joker is different compared with his predecessors, and he briefly commented on this, saying, “If you don't break rules, you're not going to strike new ground.”
Apparently, Leto was so in tune with portraying his character that he has decided to take some down time period after filming “Suicide Squad.” The actor jokingly told Empire Magazine that he will be “cooling down” for the “rest of his life.”
“Suicide Squad” director David Ayer chimed in and told Empire Magazine that Leto’s version of the Joker is “scary.”Fellow “Suicide Squad” cast Adam Beach also once marveled at Leto’s version of the Joker. He was amazed at his capacity in portraying someone who is both “beautiful” and “psychotic.”
