Super Bowl 2017 ticket prices crash by 20 percent after Dallas Cowboys exit
The Dallas Cowboys, popularly referred to as "America's Team," were eliminated from the NFL Playoffs Sunday following a narrow defeat to the Green Bay Packers. Barely minutes after their ouster, the ticket resale market for next month's Super Bowl LI took a significant nosedive, according to a fresh report.
The Cowboys finished the regular season with the best record (13-3) in the National Football Conference (NFC) and were projected to make their first run to the Super Bowl since 1996 when they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to ESPN, ticket prices for Super Bowl 51 crashed nearly 20 percent from $US4,195 ($AU5,611) to US$3,349 ($AU4,479) following Dallas' 34-31 defeat on Sunday. The report added that tickets in the lower end zone saw a drop of 18 percent to US$4,307 ($AU5,761).
While prices could still fluctuate depending on the two finalists for Super Bowl 2017, which will be staged at the NRG Stadium in Houston, ticket agents and brokers had already benefited from the possibility of the Cowboys qualifying for the big game -- and in the neighbouring Texas town.
Super Bowl 2017: Dallas Cowboys fans gamble on early tickets
Patrick Ryan, owner of a ticket distribution company in Houston, revealed that the location of this year's Super Bowl LI led to plenty of Cowboys fans securing early bird tickets. "The threat of the Cowboys playing in a Super Bowl within a four-hour drive of their home stadium was propping up get-in ticket prices to unprecedented levels. Cowboys fans were willing to take the risk of buying tickets and their team not making it because of the uncertainty of what would happen if they did make it."
As reported earlier, Super Bowl 2017 will offer fans in the Houston area a wholesome experience that begins during the final week of January leading into the big game on Feb. 5. Dallas' exit could also result in a slight financial downturn organisers of Super Bowl-themed festivals and events. "Tickets to all the major parties will come down in value, as there will be fewer fans, in general, coming to town to experience the Super Bowl festivities," added Ryan.
The finalists for Super Bowl LI will be decided next weekend in the aftermath of the NFC championship game, between Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons, and the AFC championship game, between the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers. According to odds makers, Tom Brady and the Patriots are favoured to win their fifth Super Bowl championship.
