‘Supergirl’ Chyler Leigh gets real about lesbian role

“Supergirl” star Chyler Leigh has been stealing the attention of viewers as Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) sister, Alex Danvers. During the latest episodes of the show, her character has been coming to terms with her sexuality. She is even romantically linked to cop Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima). In one of her latest interviews, the actress has opened up about her character and the current stage of Danvers’ life in “Supergirl.”

Leigh has shared how her character's coming out feels like. She said it feels like a wild ride. She is also aware that there have been numerous amounts of good reactions, as well as negatives ones.

She believes that the negative comments about Danvers’ sexual preference are from people who perhaps don't have that acceptance of what the world is today. But she also receives thousands of messages and photos from viewers who were inspired by Danvers’ story. In return, they also share their stories to her.

Leigh said that portraying the role is an amazing opportunity. “If this isn’t an amazing opportunity to speak to the heart of humanity as a whole and also touch people individually, I don’t know what is,” she said.

The actress went on to share that the executive producer, Greg Berlanti, understands that it is uncommon to see an adult deal with the process that her character is going through. That is something he sees as a pivotal element of the story. “He’d come across the story of a married woman who was 77 and had just come to realize she was, in fact, a lesbian,” Leigh said.

When asked about how it feels like to be working with Lima, she said there is something special about their connection. Leigh was insistent on being part of the casting process because she was determined to get the right person to wear the shoes of Sawyer.

“Floriana was the second girl to come in, and as soon as she walked in, I knew it was her,” Leigh has told TV Insider. She added that she is very persistent in telling the story of Danvers and Sawyer the right way.

Leigh is also known for her portrayals of Janey Briggs in “Not Another Teen Movie” and Dr Lexie Grey in the ABC medical drama, “Grey's Anatomy.” The second part of “Supergirl” season 2 has returned to the small screens on Jan. 23. The series airs on Fox8 in Australia.
