‘Supernatural’: Danneel Ackles says Sister Jo won’t be Dean’s love interest
The most anticipated new character in “Supernatural” won’t be a love interest for any of the cast members. The arrival of Sister Jo, played by Danneel Ackles, is a mystery to fans, who are both excited for the new character and afraid that she might just be reduced to a romantic subplot.
Because the former “One Tree Hill” star is married to Jensen Ackles, who plays main character Dean Winchester in the show, fans fear that Danneel was brought to the show to play Dean’s love interest. Danneel, who jokingly tweeted in 2006 that she would guest star in “Supernatural” in its season 13, said the producers kept her character clean of any romantic entanglement.
“I didn’t want to go on ‘Supernatural’ and be a love interest of the week or have the guys kill me in some horrific way,” she told EW. The character was made especially for her and was pitched to her as a “badass,” that’s why she wanted to do it.
Sister Jo is such a very powerful faith healer that she captured the attention of Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino). And whenever there’s Lucifer, the Winchester boys – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean – follow. Danneel described her character as “not really being good or bad.” Jo is drawn to powerful people, and that means she is drawn to Lucifer. They can help each other. And when it comes to Sam and Dean, she also ends up helping them in a way.
This isn’t the first time a real-life couple acted together in the show. Jared met his future wife Genevieve Padalecki (nee Cortese) in the show. She played the duplicitous Ruby, who had also been Sam’s love interest for a time.
It’s also not the first time Danneel and Jensen starred in a project together. They did “Ten Inch Hero” in 2007.
When asked if there would be references to their marriage or their collaboration in “Ten Inch Hero” in the show, Danneel was adamant that it would not be the case.
“Good God, no! At least not ‘Ten Inch Hero.’ But no, I think they kept it pretty clean,” she told Variety. She also shot down the idea that she would play out Dean’s wife if they did another episode similar to “The French Mistake,” which was an episode in season 6 where Sam and Dean were transported to an alternate universe as Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.
Danneel’s first episode in “Supernatural” will be the 13th episode, “Devil’s Bargain.” She will be on a recurring role throughout the season. The show also stars Misha Collins as Castiel.
“Supernatural” airs in the US on The CW on Thursdays. The show airs several episodes behind in Australia on Eleven every Monday.
