'Supernatural' Season 9, Episode 23 ‘Do You Believe in Miracles?’ Recap/Spoilers: Dean Winchester Embraces New Kind of Life with Demon Crowley
The ultimate fight against Metatron (Curtis Armstrong) will finally happen in the finale episode of "Supernatural" Season 9 titled "Do You Believe in Miracles?" with Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) ready to take on the enemy with the power of the Mark of Cain and the First Blade. However, the result of Dean's fight with Metatron and the controversial mark changed his fate in the CW TV series.
Spoiler alert: This feature contains major spoilers on "Supernatural" Season 9, Episode 23 titled "Do You Believe in Miracles?" After Dean Winchester attacked Gadreel (Tahmoh Penikett), Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) and Castiel (Misha Collins) locked him up in the Men of Letters bunker.
Gadreel left the bunker wounded but Sam and Castiel tracked down the fallen angel and healed him. Meanwhile, Dean continues to suffer the effects of the Mark of Cain and this time, he is coughing out blood.
As for Metatron, he used the angel radio to make announcements to his growing followers and went out on a mission to save people from death and sickness to convince him that he is a "miracle worker" or the "messiah."
Dean summoned Crowley (Mark Sheppard) to ask what is happening to him with the Mark of Cain and to reveal that he wants to get rid of it. The King of Hell explained that his body is not strong enough to hold the Mark, the less he kills the less he feels better and Cain was able to handle the mark because he was a demon.
Dean teamed up with Crowley to escape the Men of Letters with the First Blade weapon and the two stop by a restaurant to find out where Metatron is. Dean ordered coffee and cheeseburger but he just left it when he took off to find Metatron after Crowley's followers showed Metatron's viral video where he resurrected a woman run over by a vehicle.
Castiel and Gadreel head to a playground where the gate to Heaven is kept safe. Gadreel pretended to have captured Castiel in order to enter Heaven but their plan failed when the angels there locked them up knowing they are up to something against Metatron.
Dean arrived at the hit-and-run victim's trailer to see his brother waiting for him. The Winchester brothers had another clash but eventually agreed in taking down Metatron to finish the mess once and for all. However, Dean still wanted to protect his younger brother so he knocked Sam out to deal with Metatron alone.
Up in Heaven, Gadreel was upset that he is back to where he was imprisoned for thousands of years. The fallen angel decided to sacrifice himself to protect the angels who cannot protect themselves from Metatron's plan and free Castiel so he can find where Metatron is hiding the tablet.
Dean and Metatron finally faced each other but Dean's power was not enough to defeat Metatron who succeeded in kicking the First Blade away and beating up Dean. Dean was too late in summoning the weapon because Metatron stabbed him with the angel blade and Sam arrived just in time to see what Metatron did.
Dean collapsed at the same time that Castiel broke the angel tablet that he found under Metatron's typewriter. Sam failed to stab Metatron for killing Dean because he disappeared and went back to Heaven.
The angels finally learned about Metatron's trickery when Castiel turned on the angel radio for them to hear what Metatron has to say. Castiel had the chance to stab Metatron with the angel blade but the next scene showed Hannah and Castiel just locking Metatron up in Heaven's prison.
Sam brought back Dean's dead body at the Men of Letters bunker and decided to summon Crowley for a deal that can bring his brother back. Crowley appeared in Dean's doorway telling him that Sam's action is expected.
However, Crowley revealed that there is something about the Mark of Cain that would change Dean's fate. Crowley admitted that he really had no idea something like this would happen when he asked Dean to take the Mark of Cain.
The King of Hell finally revealed Cain's story that he did not tell Dean: Cain (Timothy Omundson) did kill himself with the First Blade to free himself from the urge of killing in order to survive but the Mark did not quite let it go that easy and brought Cain back as a demon.
Crowley placed the First Blade on Dean's hand and told him that maybe miracles do come true. Crowley further told Dean that what he is feeling is not death but a new kind life. "Open your eyes, Dean. See what I see, feel what I feel," Crowley stated. Dean Winchester did open his eyes and they were the black eyes of a demon.
