American rock band The Beach Boys will be surfing Australia when they head to the land down under for an act at the Gold Coast 600 motor race in October.

Mike Love, the band's co-lead singer, says that the event on the Gold Coast will be a one-off on this trip but there are plans of coming back to Australia in 2012.

"It's going to be fun - or should I say, Fun Fun Fun," he said.

"We sing the songs in their original keys and if you close your eyes it sounds just like the mid '60's when we're singing California Girls, I Get Around, Fun Fun Fun, Help Me Rhonda, Do it Again and all that.

"We're really obsessed with making those songs come to life like the originals and being true to their original forms.

"The subject matter of The Beach Boys was diverse. It was songs about things we knew from growing up in southern California, not too far from the beach.

"How do you get to the beach? In your car. What kind of car do you have? Well I'd like to have a Corvette, I'd like to have a Thunderbird.

"There's a lot of romance involved in the automotive part of our repertoire and we've probably been invited to the 600 on the Gold Coast partly because of that, because there's always been a fascination with great, fast cars," Love added.

"We owned a few and we just sang about them and surfing and things like school and relationships, you know Wouldn't It Be Nice, Surfer Girl and that kind of thing."

The Gold Coast 600 replaced the Indy in 2009 and will run from October 22 to 24 of this year.

Other artists who will join The Beach Boys in the Saturday night event are Baby Animals, Noiseworks, The Angels, Mondo Rock, James Reyne and Richard Clapton.
