Surgeon Allegedly Left Broken Drill Piece In Patient's Shoulder; Patient Cancels Wedding Plans Twice
A mother-of-two from Baldivis in Perth, Natasha Ugle, is suing her orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Li-on Lam. She claimed that he had allegedly left a piece of a broken drill in her shoulder during a surgery performed in 2012 at a private hospital in Perth.
According to Perth Now, Ugle had the surgery to stabilise the right shoulder that she kept dislocating on a regular basis. After her surgery, during a follow-up X-ray, a broken 2 centimeters drill piece was found in her shoulder. She feared possibe complications, so she had not yet taken it out yet.
She said that she had undergone the surgery so that she could play with her five-year-old daughter as well as her grandchild. She added that because of the pain, she was unable to carry them. She wished she had never gone in for the surgery because she felt trapped.
She said that the last two years had been very stressful as well as financially draining for her and her family. She was not able to work either because of the pain. She cried a lot because of the high level of pain she was experiencing.
Ugle said that she had been relying on her partner financially, and that was the hardest part. She had to cancel her wedding plans twice because of the alleged blunder in the surgery. The couple had initially planned to marry in 2013, but because of the financial situation they were in, they were unable to. They then decided to push the wedding by a year, but they aren't sure when it would take place.
Ugle had lodged a writ in the District Court against the surgeon. Shine Lawyers is helping her with claiming her damages. A solicitor from Shine Lawyers, Jennifer Craig, said that the situation of Ugle is a preventable one. What was initially supposed to be a routine procedure, which had a four-month recovery period, turned out to be a disaster for Ugle as she has been suffering for more than two years with pain and discomfort.
