Australia and its people are by far the wealthiest nation and citizens in the world, according to the 2011 Credit Suisse Global Wealth report.

Australians are worth nearly US$221,704 ($217,559), the world's highest and nearly four times surpassing the amount of each US adult.

Published Wednesday, the 2011 Credit Suisse Global Wealth report said in in 2011, Australia placed as the second wealthiest country behind Switzerland on an average basis.

Analyzing the wealth of the world's 4.5 billion adult population, the report found that the wealth rate per adult in Australia had quadrupled over the past decade. It likewise said that the country's total wealth placed at US$6.4 trillion.

The strong Australian dollar, property ownership levels and strong labor market all played vital factors that led to Australia's financial growth capacity, the 2011 Credit Suisse Global Wealth said.

The proportion of Australian adults worth more than $US100,000 is eight times the global average, the report added.

The same report also said the key contributor of global wealth came from Asia Pacific, contributing 36 per cent of global wealth creation since 2000, and 54 per cent since January 2010 alone.

The 2011 Credit Suisse Global Wealth report forecasts that total household wealth worldwide will grow 50 per cent to $345 trillion from the present $231 trillion in the next five years.
