With most Australians giving their thumbs of approval to Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan's handling of the economy, Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey downplayed on Monday the latest survey results, stressing that most of those polled were clueless on the true state of the country's economy.

Mr Hockey said that the results would be reflecting a totally different story if only "people were fully aware of the incompetence of Wayne Swan as treasurer."

According to the latest survey by the Auspoll, 54 percent of those queried expressed satisfaction that Mr Swan was efficiently managing the national budget while only 46 percent of the 1400 persons polled gave Mr Hockey favourable review.

Mr Hockey said that the survey is reflective of Labor's success in duping many Australians to believe that they were steering the economy just fine but the truth is the government has been hiding facts from careful scrutiny.

He cited the revised mining tax as an example, where a member of the government's implementing tax committee, Erica Smythe, had admitted that Mr Swan's claim of up to $10.5 billion of tax collections could be unrealistic and even unattainable.

Mr Hockey urged the labor party "to come clean with the Australian people about where this pot of gold is that they keep reaching into to pay for all their promises."

On the part of the opposition, he claimed that they are committed to a policy of full transparency as he stressed that the coalition is all set to make public its full policy costing by the end of the week, promising that "all the details would be out before Friday."
