London may be the world's most expensive city, but Sydney in Australia is the most reputable city in the world, a recent study by the Reputation Institute said.
The 2013 City RepTrak Study, which had over 22,000 respondents from G8 nations and conducted in January and March 2013, ranked the 100 most reputable cities in the world based on respondents' level of trust, esteem, admiration and respect and perceptions, covering 13 attributes based on three dimensions - advanced economy, appealing environment and effective government.
Sydney got the highest score of 77.4 out of 100 points. It was followed by Toronto in Canada (76.9), Stockholm in Sweden (76.9), Vienna in Austria (76.9) and Venice in Italy (75.8).
Cities with ill reputations were led by Baghdad in Iraq (28.5), Tehran in Iran (32.1), Karachi in Pakistan (43.5), Nairobi in Kenya (44.4) and Cairo in Egypt (46.1).
Explaining the results, Fernando Prado, head of the Place Reputation Unit of Reputation Institute said in a statement, "The cities with the best reputations are those which have been able to maintain a balance and certain leadership in each of the three dimensions of our model, while those cities with poor reputation show bias towards fewer of the mentioned dimensions."
He added neither the residents nor the gross domestic product of a country is an essential factor to have a good reputation.
Mr Prado pointed out the study found that key drivers for a city to have good reputation are the beauty of the urban environment - which is the most influential factor - safety, the cultural, gastronomy and entertainment offering and standards of living. These are common characteristics of the top 5 cities, he said.
"The large a city is, the more complicated it becomes to manage. This is one of the reasons that explain why, with the exception of London, the top ten in the RepTrak Study features only medium-sized cities. Our study shows us that those managing cities also need to pay attention to the finer details that ultimately define the relationship with stakeholders, rather than focus solely on the headline figures of tourist arrivals or product sales. Destinations, like businesses, need to pay attention to their reputation," stressed Mr Prado.
London ranked 9th with a score of 74.4. The only other Australian city high on the list is Melbourne at15th place (73.5), while New Zealand's Auckland is on 24th place (72.1).
Expedia, in a comparison infographic between London and Sydney, show why the host city of the famous Opera House is more popular due to its more constant weather and less temperature variation across the seasons, has more restaurants with AGFG Chef Hats than Michelin-starred restaurants in London and offers sun-kissed urban sandy beaches versus London's rolling green parks.
