Commuters in Sydney's Inner-West area will have more options of public transport within two years. The Government has budgeted $55 million to fast-track its light rail project which is expected to commence within this year.

Residents from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill will have more public transport available once the light rail project will be placed.

However, commuters in the North-West zone of the city will not have new road projects planned in the near term. The Government budget does not have allocation for the area. Motorists experience day-to-day frustrations when stuck on the M2 in peak-hour traffic jams.

Although the Government has announced a record roads budget of $4.7 billion, three-quarters of the budget will be spent in rural and regional areas.

Treasurer Eric Roozendaal said that the only way to move around Sydney is via the roads.

"That's why we are investing into light rail, that's why we're investing into new Western Express. That is why we're building the south-west rail link," he said.

"At the end of the day we need to move more people around this international city and you need to have those transport systems in place."

The budget has not won over transport lobby groups like the Tourism and Transport Forum. Such groups said the Government has missed a great opportunity to start delivering critical transport links.
