T-Pain’s Auto-Tuned Cover Of Lorde’s ‘Royals’ Called The Worst One Yet
Lorde’s “Royals” has been covered by a lot of artists, both famous and still starting, since it has hit mainstream in 2013. Some earned praises, while others didn’t stand out from the rest. However, not one of their versions was deemed the worst. That distinct recognition goes to rapper T-Pain, whose “Royals” version was the complete opposite of the original’s message.
The 17-year-old Kiwi songstress was singing being unworldly as opposed to the materialism of celebrity life in her Grammy Award-winning song “Royals.” Indeed, she talked about only driving Cadillac in her dream.
But American rapper T-Pain can’t say that he’s only dreamt of Cadillacs. He’s already driving one in real life. And so he brags about his wealth and excessive lifestyle in his overly auto-tuned “Royals” cover.
His cover, which features Young Cash, completely changed the lyrics of Lorde’s song.
The lyrics include:
“Cause every song was like
Nappy hair, smoke, drink, Tallahassee, what’s up
Boom, know what it is, ni*** fill the truck up
We don’t care, look at all these Cadillacs on 20s”
“And every song was like
Work hard, play hard, money over everything
Cowboy hat and the hood cap or the chain
We don’t care, started from the bottom, now we’re here”
“Seems like yesterday we were drinking Crown Royal
We ain’t really give a f***
Now they try to hate on us
And I just party on my bus”
T-Pain’s version isn’t getting rave reviews online. The top comment on the YouTube video was “please quit making music.”
New Zealand Herald reckoned that it may be the worst cover of Lorde’s hit yet, while showbiz gossip Web site The Wrap called it “ridiculous.”
If T-Pain’s “Royals” cover isn’t your thing, here are other artists that have also tried their own version of the catchy song.
