Philippine-Taiwan relations remain strong despite the recent death of a Taiwanese fisherman in the hands of the Philippine Coast Guard.

This was the message that both countries wanted to convey as several non-government organizations (NGOs) in Taiwan treated the Filipino workers in Taipei to a unity street party on Sunday, May 26.

Dubbed as "Gently Taiwan Cares," the event was an expression of gratitude by the Taiwanese for the Filipino workers' contribution to their country. It showed that despite the issues between governments of both countries, citizens continue to share friendly relations and live in harmony on the island.

"We bring the message to everyone that there is a different voice in society. We care for the harmony in the society, and we are grateful to everyone who work here, who live here to build a family," NGOs spokesperson Steve Huang said in a video posted by Klaus Bardenhagen on Youtube.

Mr Huang spoke on behalf of the Taiwanese people, assuring Filipinos that they are in a safe place and that there's no reason to fear living in Taiwan even after the fateful shooting incident earlier this month.

"We hold this event to tell the people that here, the society in Taiwan is very suppressed (regarding the conflict), most of us are friendly to (Filipino) people. We help each other, we care (for) each other," Mr Huang said.

He also underscored the value of Filipinos in their society, recognising their contributions not just in the companies they work for but also being good members of the community.

The event was attended several NGOs and Filipino workers and their families.

Maria Victoria Cornos, who spoke on behalf of her fellow Filipinos in Taiwan, expressed optimism that the event will help the present situation become better.

She said the solidarity party is an indication that everything will be alright on the island, and relationships have not been strained among citizens despite government disputes.

"Hopefully, our condition here in Taiwan, with all the Filipinos, will be much better in the future," she added.

Ms Cornos also made an appeal to her countrymen to avoid creating stories that may only make the situation worse. She requested Filipinos to stick to the truth and remain calm.

The Taiwan-Philippines row began after a Philippine patrol boat opened fire on a Taiwanese fishing vessel in waters both countries are laying claims on. The incident resulted to the death of one Taiwanese fisherman.

Both countries are now conducting parallel investigations on the incident.
