Tasmanian mining site hit by rockslides stabilise, Grange rules out impact on jobs
Grange Resources reported today that no further rockfalls occurred so far on its Savage River ore mine pit, located in Tasmania's west coast, since close to half million tonnes of rock cascaded down to the site on Thursday last week.
Company chief operating officer Wayne Bould said that the mining area has stabilised though no mining activities would be conducted on the site for the time being as he gave assurance that "there's been no further movement, it's as it was effectively the minute after it happened."
Mr Bould said they were able to move out a bulldozer and an excavator trapped on the site when the area stabilised as he stressed that the rockfall incident should not affect the company's 600 workers, who were evacuated prior to the rockslide as the mining site's safety system detected the problem early.
As of now, he said that Grange is reworking the mining plan so the incident can be addressed without delaying production or affecting the workforce, stressing that "at this stage it won't affect anything, we may need to look at that, review that as we go."
He added that the company is openly working and cooperating with the employees, who are constantly informed on further developments, and "we'll keep them involved and most of the planning that happens involves them helping us plan."
