The third place winners of the top reality show, “The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business”, Gary and Mallory Ervin claims that a taxi driver has cost them a million dollar prize in the competition.
In an exclusive interview with The Reality TV World, the Ervins described their experience with the taxi driver, when asked if their loss can be attributed to the rejection they got from the drivers as they flew in from Brazil and were leaving the airport in Miami.
Mallory and Gary arrived at the final pitstop of the reality show after runner-ups Nathaniel “Big Easy” Lofton and Herbert “Flight Time” Lang. Sisters Jennifer Hoffman and LaKisha Hoffman won the final leg of the finale making them the winner of the 18th season of CBS long-running reality competition.
Mallory recounted how they had to get off the taxi and gave way to the lady waiting ahead of them.
“It's funny because there was a lady in a taxi ahead of us -- this is what really happened -- but we kind of jumped in the first taxi and she said, "I've been waiting for this 30 minutes!" I guess that's the Kentucky niceness that's coming out. We got out of the taxi and got in the next one. So, kind of sucked, but...,” Mallory told The Reality TV World describing how they let the lady passenger took the ride that could have brought them to the $1M prize.
What added insult to injury is the knowledge that the taxi was what they needed to get ahead of the race. In support to Mallory’s exasperation, Gary quickly added: It even had an in-dash GPS in it!
In more tax-driver stories, the Reality TV World asked the-father-and-daughter team their experience driving to the marina with taxi driver Sterling.
The host of the TV show asked the Ervins if the manner they handled the driver was an ‘intentional strategy’ emphasizing that they appeared ‘skeptical’ if the driver really knew where he was going.
Mallory said: “Yeah, well, I mean there were a lot of things a "little off" with the taxi and the taxi situation and the driver and everything, but I guess I was just trying to do everything I could to get there.”
She also added, “For that to happen in the very beginning, we were just so bummed out, but we always stay nice. We always stay positive and hope that that's going to pull us through. So, I guess it didn't this time, but it usually does.”
Gary and Mallory is among the 11 teams of two featured in this year’s season of the “The Amazing Race 18” also known as “The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business”.
Hosted by Phil Keoghan, this year’s season began on Sunday February 20 and the season finale was aired on May 8 on CBS.
