Taylor Swift Slams ‘Sexist’ Critics; Olly Murs Says Sorry to Her
Taylor Swift has slammed people who criticise her for writing music about her ex-boyfriends, prompting Olly Murs to apologise to her.
Earlier on Monday, in an interview with 2Day FM’s “Jules, Merrick and Sophie,” Swift lashed out at people who thought she writes about her former relationships so often. She has been known to write songs about her failed relationships, and people have been speculating which ex-boyfriend she refers to in her songs.
When presenter Sophie Monk asked her what’s her take on her critics’ claim about her propensity to write such lyrics, the 24-year-old Grammy winner offered a simple explanation for it: There’s a sexist element to it.
“You’re going to have people who are going to see the depth from which you approached a song, the fact that you put your real emotions into it, and that’s valuable and that’s good and that’s real, and then you’re going to have people who are going to say, ‘Oh, you know, like, she just writes songs about her ex-boyfriends,’ and I think frankly that’s just a very sexist angle to take,” she pointed out.
“No one says that about Ed Sheeran. No one says that about Bruno Mars. They’re all writing about their exes, their current girlfriends, their love life and no one raises a red flag there.”
Meanwhile, Murs has apologised to her for the comment that he made regarding the same topic. He had said that he believed Harry Styles from One Direction, who dated the songstress in the past, has already given her his share of material for her songs.
Murs, 30, was sorry for his remark, saying he only meant that as a joke in defence of his friend.
“I reached out to Taylor around two days ago. I gave her a letter and said, ‘I’m really sorry ... It came out wrong. I’m sorry I didn’t mean to make any offence,’” the “Wrapped Up” crooner told Daily Mail Australia.
“It always came out that every article Taylor writes songs and they always link it to Harry so I was just making a joke and defending my mate.”
Swift’s latest song “Out of the Woods” is said to be about Styles.
Murs and Swift were both in the grand finale of “The X Factor Australia,” where they performed separately. It’s unclear if they have met and talked backstage.

In the same interview, Swift also revealed that whenever she has a new song, she lets her pals Ed Sheeran and Lorde listen to it first.
“Ed is one of the first people I play it for, and Lorde, my friend Ella,” she said, mentioning the Kiwi teen’s real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor. “I respect their opinions, and so if they have a favourite song, I pay attention to that.”
She added that Sheeran is “obsessed” with “Bad Blood” from her album “1989,” while Lorde loves “Welcome to New York.”
