A young man from Tennessee suffers from a peculiar medical condition which has been termed as a medical mystery. He sheds tears of blood.

It all started 7 years back when Michael Spann, now 22, started producing blood instead of tears from his eyes. In addition to his eyes, the tears started coming out of his ears, nose and mouth on a daily basis. The medical condition, unlike shedding tears, causes extreme pain. On the other hand, there seems to be no explanation available in Medical Science for Mr Spann's physical state.

The medical condition is called 'haemolacria'. The bleeding, along with headache, used to torture Mr Spann on a daily basis. The condition has, however, become better with time as now it occurs one or two times a week only. Mr Spann does not have a health insurance, which made his case even worse financially. Tennessee Doctors performed extensive tests on him and did not come up with any logical explanation for the medical condition; nor were they able to recommend any form of treatment since the cause of the problem remained to be an unsolved mystery.

Calvino Inman shares a similar story with CNN as he found himself crying blood in 2009 and thought he was about to die. The Tennessee teenager was taken to an emergency room in a hurry but his medical condition could only leave the doctors bewildered. A number of tests, including MRI, USG and CT Scan, were performed. However, all test results were not conclusive enough for the doctors to suggest a treatment.

Rashida Khatoon from the north-eastern part of India was reported to have similar condition. She was found shedding tears of blood in 2009. Even though Indian doctors found the medical condition inexplicable, local religious gurus declared the incident as a miracle. The woman was treated with respect as people started bowing before her and bestowing her family with holy offerings. Worshippers started visiting her only to watch her cry many times in a day.

Doctors from all over the world, nevertheless, have been bothered by the tears of blood since the sixteenth century when, in Italy, a nun was reported to have menstruated from her ears and eyes in 1581.
