Tech Firms, Sellers Dropping Gadget Prices – $381 Asus VivoTab RT, $249 Samsung Chromebook at Amazon; $25 Raspberry Pi Linus at Allied
For price sensitive techies, now is a good time to consider buying a new tablet or computer with technology firms and sellers offering bargain deals.
For starters, ZDNET reports that the Windows RT, the lower version of Windows 8, is speculated to be replaced by Windows Blue which could explain why Asus, Dell and Lenovo cut the prices of their respective Windows RT tablets. IDG News said the Asus VivoTab RT now has a lower price tag of $381 at Amazon, while OfficeDepot and B&H Photo offers a $50 cut to $549.
Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga 11 convertible tablet retails at Amazon for $499, significantly down from the $759 price tag of the 64GB device during the Black Friday sale in 2012.
Dell's 32GB version of the XPS 10 starts at $449, already down by $50 from its initial launch price in October 2012.
The cut price appears to be in preparation for the roll out of new Dell devices with screen sizes larger than 10 inches. These new products are actually refreshes of the company's current tablet offerings, disclosed Steve Lalla, vice president and general manager of mobile products and solutions at Dell.
These new tablets are the successors of the Windows RT-run XPS 10 and Windows 8 Pro-run Latitude 10. Mr Lalla added that the company is working on more Windows 8 and Windows RT devices but he provided no details of the refreshes and its release dates.
Amazon also has the Samsung Chromebook on sale for $249, which has been on the eCommerce site's best seller list for laptops in the past few weeks.
For those with really low budgets, they may consider buying the Raspberry Pi Linux PC which for $25 comes with 256 MB of RAM, 700MHz ARM processor, USB port and no case. In the U.S., the device which went on sale on Monday, could be found at Allied Electronics.
The store had only 46 units on stock as of Tuesday, but Allied said it anticipates the delivery of 200 more units later this week. The $25 device is for Model A, while Allied also has a $35 device, Model B which has twice the RAM, 2 USB ports and an Ethernet port. It is also available at Newark.
