Ted Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta. If he becomes the Republican nominee for the 2016 election, there will be a strong probability that the U.S. would get its first Canadian president.

Mr Cruz has been under the radar for the last few months as he was not a U.S. born citizen. Thus, the Texas senator should not be allowed to be the head of state. It is the same reason why Arnold Schwarzenegger cannot run for the president's job. One must be born in the U.S. to be a natural citizen in order to be eligible for being the president. If the citizenship is secured any other way, it is not considered well enough for the presidential post.

On the other hand, in spite of Mr Cruz being born in Calgary in 1970; U.S. laws do not technically consider him as a Canadian. On the contrary, he is thought to be a born American.

The reason is that Mr Cruz's mother is a citizen of the United States of America. She merely gave birth to her son in the Canadian border. Nevertheless, Mr Cruz was given the American citizenship after he was born.

Cathy Frazier, Ted Cruz's spokesperson, spoke to the Dallas Morning News and opined that Mr Cruz was never a Canadian citizen. He is born American. Thus, he is a U.S. citizen by birth, according to Mr Frazier.

On the contrary, it was noted by both the blog Slate and the Washington Post that a person is a Canadian citizen if born in Canada. Additionally, s/he can acquire a dual citizenship as well. This means that Mr Cruz's nationality is definitely under scrutiny for some valid reasons.

There are some interesting facts about Mr Cruz whose father if from Cuba. If Mr Cruz's version were to be believed, his father fought during the revolution in his teens. Rafael Cruz belonged to the guerrilla force which blew up buildings and threw Molotov cocktails; informs Mr Cruz in his 2006 profile. The senior Cruz started living in the U.S. since 1957.
