Telangana: A Dangerous Trend? Who’s Next?
The Government of India gave in to the demand of a separate state within the country, which lasted about 45 years. In all probability, "Telangana", the 29th state of India, is going to be formed next year. The new state is likely to share the capital of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, at least for the coming 5 years. On the other hand, this encourages separatist movements all over the world.
Separatist movements, which can easily be termed dangerous for the unity of a nation, are no stranger to the rest of the world. The trend to get separated from its roots may leave the world with tiny granules of self-centred states, instead of powerful nations. It seems like nations too, like people, are in a mood to prefer breaking up instead of working on relationships.
Africa
Countries like Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Comoros, Congo and Egypt among several others have established themselves to be bloody battlefields as separatist movements continue to leave permanent injuries on the largest continent in the world. There are ethnic groups, political parties, militant organisations as well as advocacy groups who have been tirelessly working on getting separated from each other.
Asia
USSR was the largest nation in the world before it was divided in to 12 independent nations in 1991. There are several other countries in Asia such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Pakistan and India among many others which may repeat the history. There have been numerous movements in favour of autonomous areas, proposed states and even individual nations.
Europe
Bosnia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland and Netherlands are just a few among various other nations which have witnessed separatist movements on an active level. There have been bloodshed, killings, rapes and many other violent activities to justify the demand of separate states.
North America
Canada, Costa Rica and even U.S.A are not far behind when it comes to separatist movements. There have been claims of having separate states like Alaska, Texas and Vermont in the U.S. while Canada has noticed claims to have separate states like Cascadia and Quebec.
Oceania
New Zealand, Fiji and even Australia are among the nations which have been facing movements as well. The claim of separatism includes secessionism and autonomism.
South America
Another soft spot for bloody movements, countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia and Venezuela have suffered for decades. We may witness new states like Mapuche Nation, Republic of Santa Cruz and República do Rio de Janeiro in near future.
