Tennis News: Azarenka Rues Controversial Call At 2015 French Open
Victoria Azarenka had strong words for the French Open officials after an umpire’s decision became a factor in her third round loss to Serena Williams on Saturday.
The player from Belarus called for a review of the current tennis rules after in one play in the second set, she felt short-changed when the umpire decided to replay a point, which she eventually lost. The world number one American went on to win that second set and the match 3-6 6-4 6-2.
"Sometimes we need to have a review...a damn review because it was so clear. That was so damn clear that you cannot make these mistakes at this level," Azarenka said in the post-game press conference.
"Because I'm not saying this as an excuse or saying because of that point I lost the match, that's not what I'm saying. But in that moment if you don't have a review it's causing a lot of problems. This rule that is an umpire's call, I don't get it. How would you call that? She already hit the ball."
"We have Hawk-Eye so might as well just have that because it's not easy for an umpire. But it's definitely not easy on the player when you get screwed like that," Azarenka added.
The Hawk-Eye system is not used in the clay courts at Roland Garros but used in other Grand Slam tournaments and other surfaces. Azarenka is now 0-9 against Williams all majors meetings and 3-16 overall in their career meetings.
Williams advanced to the next round against another American in Sloane Stephens, who beat Tsvetana Pironkova in her fourth round match-up.
