Fans of Roger Federer will just have to wait for the official announcement if the Swiss Maestro’s partnership with veteran Martina Hingis for a tennis event at the 2016 Rio Olympics will push through.

According to a tweet from Christopher Clarey, a tennis expert from The New York Times, Federer is still on vacation but an announcement is due soon with regards to the Federer-Hingis pairing at the mixed doubles event in the Summer Olympics next year.

The anticipation for the announcement started growing the past few days because of a national paper in Switzerland that claimed that Federer has already accepted the offer of teaming up with Hingis. It also reported that another top player from Switzerland, Stanislas Wawrinka, has been contacted by Hingis and could also play in the mixed doubles matches.

The report also stated that Federer is even considering playing all Rio Olympic Games competitions: the men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Should the Federer-Hingis pairing push through, the Swiss team will easily become the most decorated duo to participate in the Olympic tennis event with a total of 22 Grand Slam titles from the two Swiss greats. In her WTA singles career, Hingis has won five Grand Slam titles while Federer holds the all-time record for 17 Grand Slam titles.

The Federer-Hingis pair had a successful stint over a decade ago when they won the 2001 Hopman Cup. At that time, Hingis was ranked No. 4 in the WTA rankings while Federer was ranked No. 13 in the ATP rankings.
