Sam Stosur and Bernard Tomic successfully got past their first hurdle in their Wimbledon Open buildup as both Aussie tennis stars punched their way to the second round of the AEGON International at Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club.

Stosur, who admitted playing on grass is the weakest part of the game, advanced to the next round following her 6-2, 6-3 victory over no. 8 seed Nadia Petrova on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Stosur hasn't reached beyond the third round of the Wimbledon Open since she turned professional in 2002.

However, Stosur hopes her latest victory against Petrova, a two-time Wimbledon Open quarterfinalist, could jumpstart her grass court campaign, especially in the upcoming Wimbledon Open championship at All-England Tennis club.

"You look at today and it's 'why on earth would I never like playing on grass?' Today was great," Stosur told The Australian on Tuesday. "But it's hard to replicate that sometimes.

"Sometimes you've got to let go from that and understand there's going to be some rough points in a match and some great ones," she added.

Stosur will next face Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova, who defeated compatriot Klára Zakopalová 6-4, 7-6 in the first round.

Meanwhile, Tomic progressed to the second round after defeating British qualifier James Ward 6-3, 6-4 in his AEGON International opener. Tomic, who reached the quarterfinal of the Wimbledon Open in 2011, will next face Frenchman Julien Benneteau.
