Texans Fans Lose It, Burn Schaub's Jersey
Ten-year veteran Matt Schaub holds every passing record in Houston, Texas, history, including the team single-game passing yards record -- 527 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Nov 11, 2012. After a 2012 season where he was invited to the Pro Bowl and had a pass completion rate of 64.3%, one would think that he will finally get the respect that is due him. In fact, after being kicked in the groin at Thanksgiving by Ndamukong Suh, he took it upon himself to declare Suh "not Houston Texan-worthy".
However, some Texans fans think Schaub himself is not worthy of wearing the jersey. For one, they seem to think that Schaub's four-year, $62 million contract is way too much. Also, after stellar 2009 and 2010 seasons, his passing performance has dipped, never mind that brief respite in 2012 where he passed for 4,008 yards, including 22 touchdowns. The Texans upgraded their offensive weaponry by drafting DeAndre Hopkins with their first-round pick, but that move has not paid off significantly so far.
The tipping point came during Houston's home game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The Texans led 20-3 early in the game, but Seattle stormed back to humiliate the Texans in front of their own crowd in an overtime, 23-20. Schaub, who threw 355 yards with two touchdowns, also had two intercepted passes to his name. One of those intercepted passes, a weak toss intended for tight end Owen Daniels, ended up in the hands of Seattle's Richard Sherman, who rushed 58 yards to force the game into overtime.
While Schaub contemplated that botched play that cost his team the win, his teammates rallied around him.
"If anybody's lost faith in him, I don't see it," wide receiver Andre Johnson told media after the game.
But what do cool-headed, rational Texans fans do after a loss that hurt big time, aside from hanging a large "Cut Schaub" sign on a bridge at I-45? Burn the quarterback's jersey, of course.
