TIFF 2014: Five Asian Movies to Watch at Toronto International Film Festival

The Toronto International Film Festival officially announced the list of films to be shown in its 39th edition on Tuesday, July 22. The list includes some of the most talented names in Asia. Here are the five Asian films to watch at the festival.

Coming Home (China) - Director: Zhang Yimou

Celebrated Chinese actress Gong Li stars in this movie where she plays a woman suffering from amnesia. She has to get her memory back. At the same time, she must get in touch with her husband who has been imprisoned for a long time. Set after the Cultural Revolution in the country, the film is directed by Zhang Yimou who is famous for films like Hero and Raise the Red Lantern.

The Look of Silence (Indonesia/Denmark/Norway/Finland/United Kingdom) - Director: Joshua Oppenheimer

This documentary film is set on the shadows of Joshua Oppenheimer's earlier documentary "The Act of Killing" which was about the Indonesian killings of 1965-66. In "The Look of Silence," a family confronts former militiamen responsible for killing their son during the sixties when Indonesia carried out an anti-communist operation. This movie has also been selected in competition for the Golden Lion at the 71st Venice International Film Festival.

Iraqi Odyssey (Iraq/Switzerland/Germany/United Arab Emirates) - Director: Samir

This is another documentary which is directed by renowned Iraqi filmmaker Samir. The movie deals with the frustrations associated with the dreams of democracy in Iraq. The democratic desires are severely injured by war, foreign occupation and dictatorship. According to the official Web site of the film, Iraq today is about angry bearded men, veiled women and demolished cities.

Over Your Dead Body (Japan) - Director: Takashi Miike

Renowned auteur from Japan Takashi Miike directs this horror film which is about a theatre group and the activities back stage. There are multiple instances of vengeance and murder going on back stage when the group is rehearsing a play depicting similar situations. The controversial Japanese director has made more than 90 films, theatrical drama and TV productions so far.

Mary Kom (India) - Director: Omung Kumar

Former Miss World Priyanka Chopra, who is a renowned film star in India, stars in this biopic of the Indian boxer of the same name. Kom won the World Amateur Boxing champion five times and is the only Indian female boxer to qualify at the 2012 Supper Olympics where she won the bronze medal. Chopra who was earlier acclaimed for her performance in films like "7 Khoon Maaf," acts in the Special Presentation at the festival.
