Tiger Airways is set to expand its services in Australia following a mutual deal from the Victorian Government. The airline company announced flights would commence on November 10 in Victoria's second main airport, Avalon. Its first destination would be the Gold Coast with a flight cost of $45.

Tiger Airways already has flights to Gold Coast from Melbourne airport.

Airline company officials expect its fleet to double to 10 Airbus A320s from the planned 13-strong fleet. The airline has nine Airbuses. Six are based at the Melbourne airport.

Tiger Airways Australia chief executive Crawford Rix said the airline was "proud to call Victoria home".

The Victorian Government and Tiger Airways came up with an agreement to expand its Victorian operations with incentives. The government has not disclosed additional details of the agreed incentives.

"The Victorian Government supported Tiger's infrastructure costs, which helped its decision to base its five new planes in Victoria," a spokeswoman for Victorian Premier John Brumby said.

As part of the government deal, two of the new aircraft will be based at Avalon. Officials said that each new aircraft effectively adds 500,000 new seats a year to and from Victoria.

The increase in the Victorian-based fleet will also create 200 new jobs. This includes flight crew positions, ground handling and maintenance.

"Our Government is making the right investments to lock-in a prosperous future for our state and the Australian International Airshow puts Victoria on a world stage, showcasing our aerospace, advanced manufacturing and aviation service firms across the world," Mr. Brumby said. He noted the announcement would also be good for the state tourism.

The airline's other base is in Adelaide.
