Britain's betting business is enjoying a windfall as record number of bets has been placed on what will be royal baby's name, hair colour, weight, sex, career choice, Olympic chances.

Prince William and Kate's first child will be born any day now and punters across the world are having a gala time betting on royal baby's features and future prospects. CNN reports that bets have also been placed on who will hold the baby when the royal couple emerges from the hospital holding the baby.

According to news agency AFP report, bookies are taking an "unprecedented" number of bets on the royal baby, worth more than 1.5 million dollars so far.

"It is the biggest novelty market we have ever seen," Gary Burton, from the British betting firm Coral, told AFP.

"We did the pope, we did reality TV and this is by far the biggest we have had. It's getting busier and busier the more it goes on and the more coverage it gets."

Burton told AFP that his betting firm had taken more than £500,000 in bets on the royal baby, while Bookmaker William Hill revealed that they had taken £100,000 from punters in 100 countries.

Most of the punters are betting on a girl's name, a majority of betters on Queen's middle name Alexandra, after the media became abuzz with reports that Duchess of Cambridge Kate slipped out "d..." during a chat with a well-wisher. She told the lady who gave her a teddy bear, "Thank you, I will take that for my d..."

According to CNN, Alexandra tops the list of names with bookmakers offering it at 7/2. Charlotte is at second with 11/2.

An Austrian punter has bet £1,000 on the baby being a boy and also a second £5,000 on it being a girl, AFP reports.

"Every day that passes we presume tomorrow must be the day that it will arrive," Joe Crilly, a spokesman for William Hill, told AFP. "That is also driving people to have another wager."

Along with punters, more than 400 moms are also waiting for the naming ceremony of the royal baby, E-Online reports. U.K.'s discount shopping website Netvouchercodes.co.uk did a survey and found that these moms want their newborns to have the same name as Prince William and Kate's first born, thus they have postponed the naming of their little ones.

Reacting to the frenzy surrounding the royal baby, footballer David Beckham's jokingly said that the baby should be called David. AFP reports that the name seems doomed to remain an also-ran, with odds of between 33/1 and 100/1.

Duchess of Cornwall Camilla revealed to the media that "We are hopeful that by the end of the week he or she will be here."

And till then, the betting busisness will continue to have its peak time. One can bet without any doubt that new betting records are being set.
