Tobey Maguire praises new ‘Spider-Man’ star Tom Holland on Instagram
Tobey Maguire has nothing but praise for the new “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland. The erstwhile Sony Pictures superhero gave his spidey blessing to the 19-year-old British actor by posting a fan-made clip on Instagram.
The 40-year-old US actor played the eponymous superhero in director Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy from 2002 to 2007 before the title was passed onto 32-year-old British actor Andrew Garfield, who played the role in the rebooted “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2012 and in its 2014 sequel.
The role was then passed onto another British actor, Holland, who joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his first appearance in “Captain America: Civil War.”
For his part, Maguire didn’t seem threatened with being replaced by younger actors. In fact, he appeared supportive of Holland’s scene-stealing appearance in the latest MCU film.
The Golden Globe-nominated actor good-humouredly posted a clip on Instagram, mashing up Holland’s introduction in “Civil War” and Maguire’s scene in “Spider-Man 2.”
“Haha seriously, who made this? @tomholland2013 good job! You are great as Spider-Man. Keep it up!” he captioned the clip.
It’s unclear if Maguire has watched “Civil War” already. Nevertheless, he was accurate; Holland was magnificent as Spider-Man in the latest film, however short his appearance was.
Maguire was also supportive of Garfield when the latter was cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the rebooted films.
“When I heard it was you, I was literally like, ‘F------ perfect!’” Maguire told Garfield when they interviewed each other on VMan. “I just want it to be great, and I thought, ‘What a great actor Andrew is, I’m glad that’s what’s happening here.’”
This isn’t the first time Maguire has poked fun at himself using fan artworks. He has posted a few Spider-Man-related art on his Instagram account, praising the artists or just plain laughing at the silly photoshop work of his fans.
