Tom Cruise "did not expect" the end of his marriage. Speaking for the first time since he was served with divorce papers, the 50-year-old actor admits that he was surprised when ex-wife Katie Holmes wanted out of their marriage.

The A-list star sat down in an interview with German TV network ProSieben to talk about his latest sci-fi film "Oblivion," but ended up talking about an event that is still fresh in everyone's mind: the end of his marriage to the "Dawson's Creek" actress last year.

"I did not expect it," he simply said, referring to the divorce.

That was the only thing that he cared to admit, though. Tom, who infamously jumped up and down on Oprah Winfrey's talk show set couch to declare his love for Katie in 2005, wasn't inclined to reveal more of his feelings on the matter, except that he said he was blindsided.

"Life is a challenge to be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have everything under control, and then it hits you. That's what life is." he added. "Life is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humour."

After five years of seemingly blissful marriage, Katie shocked the world when she filed for divorce from the older actor in late June 2012. She noted in the divorce papers she filed in New York that her marriage with Tom had been "irretrievably broken" for more than six months. The real reason why she quit the marriage is unknown, but it was widely reported that she felt she was being controlled by Tom and the Church of Scientology, in which Tom is an outspoken supporter.

The now former couple married in a Scientology ceremony in Italy in 2006. They welcomed their daughter, Suri, in April of the same year.

It was the first marriage for Katie, and the third for Tom. He was married to Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990, and to Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001.
