Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's 'Edge of Tomorrow' Scores $20M Gross International Sales, Angelina Jolie's 'Maleficent' Draws $100M Sales
An gross international sales of $20 million for Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's blockbuster movie "Edge of Tomorrow" is just a small amount compared to Angeline Jolie's "Maleficent" which earned a whopping $100 million international sales from 47 countries.
According to Variety Media, "Edge of Tomorrow" was shown in 4,940 screens across the world. It hauled $2 million in Indonesia, $1.5 million in Italy, $1.5 million in Spain, and $3.1 million in United Kingdom.
Directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow revolves around the story of Lt. Col. Bill Cage (played by Tom Cruise), an officer who was killed within minutes after he was brusquely dropped into a suicide mission and has never seen a day of combat.
At the combat zone, the cowardly soldier was drenched in blood from the alien creatures that looked like oversized barnacles called Mimics. Somehow, he ended up at the alien's nervous system and was thrown into a time-lopping alien invasion forcing him to live the same fierce battle, fighting, and dying over and over again. With Lt. Col. Cage's improved skills after repeatedly facing the same combat scenes, he unites with a Special Force warrior Rita Vrataski (played by Emily Blunt) and gets closer to conquering the enemy.
While the explosive action-packed blockbuster movie was acclaimed by movie critics for the fatalistic humour, it is also vilified for being repetitive and plain ridiculous.
Meanwhile, Forbes reported that Angelina Jolie's comeback movie "Maleficent" scored $70 million over the weekend on North American sales alone. The amount already covers the $24.2 million opening day sales, $4.2 Thursday sales, and $6.7 million IMAX sales.
Directed by Robert Stromberg, "Maleficent" is a recreation of Disney's 1959 animated film "Sleeping Beauty". Disney took the villain Maleficent out and re-imagine her in live action complete with special 3D effects.
Angeline Jolie played the role of Maleficent who was a beautiful, pure-hearted young gal with a tranquil life growing up in an idyllic forest kingdom. From the one-dimensional villain in the old animated film, Maleficent has turned into a fiercest protector of their land when the harmony of their kingdom was threatened by invading army.
Ultimately, Maleficent was disparaged and betrayed by the man she loves which turned her pure heart into stone. She was bent on taking revenge that she underwent an epic combat with the invading king's successor. She put a curse on the infant and was set to making the princess' life miserable but it turned out the princess holds the key to peace and harmony in the kingdom.
While Angeline Jolie was praised by the movie critics for her mesmerizing and magnificent performance on the lead character role, the movie itself had varied feedback from critics. Hindustan Times stated that Maleficent is a perfect summer film for kids but Forbes said that it is a bleak misfire and tonal disaster.
Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's Edge of Tomorrow was released on May 30 in UK cinemas and on June 6 in U.S. Cinemas. Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie's Maleficent was released on May 28 in UK cinemas and May 30 in U.S. cinemas.
