Tomb Raider 2013: A Younger Lara Croft may be just what the Movie Needs
It may be based on the fact that the recently-released Tomb Raider game reboot was a successful merging of its old charm and new attractions. Or it may just be an experimental direction to explore Lara Croft's life further.
In any case, the next Tomb Raider movie will have the same flavor or similar elements as its game counterpart, reports ComingSoon.
This means going after an origin story, as in the case of the game, having a younger Lara Croft who will have to battle not only external demons and enemies, but also internal conflicts that come with her young age.
"We felt that she had become a little bit too superhuman over the course of the series's past, and we never really got to know her," Darrell Gallagher, Studio Head of Crystal Dynamics, said to Digital Trends.
Admittedly, the two movies that had starred Angelina Jolie was inclined towards the old Lara, where she was the unbeatable femme fetale who not only did impossible and impossible reckless things (sky diving with makeshift "wings," going after Pandora's box) without showing any trace of emotion, for the most part.
With regard to who will play the lead role, EuroGamer reports that Camilla Luddington, who has been part of the game franchise as she had provided the voice of Lara, is a candidate.
For the meantime, Tomb Raider 2013 has been well-received by critics. It is not surprising, considering that the previous but more recent releases have been less than spectacular when it comes to fans' reception, reports Digital Trends.
Clearly there is a need for change, and the game has delivered. But with the introduction of the humanized Lara in the game, can this be the new light to portray the character in and get the movie reboot will need to get back on its feet?
"There's something about her character and going back to her roots, and that's what we're doing with this," said producer Graham King, to Collider. "You're actually gonna meet her before she has all her powers as Lara Croft. It's more of a character study, but it's a really fun, fun adventure story."
Think of it as take by which Christopher Nolan treated Batman. He never lost is kick-ass ways, but you saw something beyond the mask. Hopefully, with the new Tomb Raider movie, you'll see Lara Croft for more than just her braids and boobs.
