Tony Abbott has come up with a decision yesterday to accept Daryl Somers' invitation to guest on Hey Hey It's Saturday tonight.

Somers, whose variety show is having a hard time keeping up with the ratings of Ten Network's MasterChef, last week invited both the Opposition Leader and Julia Gillard, along with Kylie Minogue, for the season finale of the show.

The Prime Minister's office turned down the invitation, while Mr Abbott's people did not respond until yesterday. Mr Abbott agreed to appear on the show, which is recorded in the Nine Network's Melbourne studios. He believes that the unscripted apppearance could be dangerous for the politically incorrect family show.

He will be judging the Red Faces talent segment of the show.

Last year, visiting crooner Harry Connick Jr found himself in trouble when he judged for the show. A "black faces" tribute to King of Pop Michael Jackson was reproached worldwide due to its racist overtones, with Connick humiliated in the process.

In the meantime, if Mr Abbott could show his funny and likeable side, he could gain appeal and secure the viewers' votes.

An appearance on a popular TV show can be a great campaign strategy for a politician.
