Tony Awards 2013: Top 5 Highlights of the 67th Annual Tony Awards [VIDEO]
The 2013 Tony Awards have women and African women winning big at the ceremony held in New York, June 10. But honoring black actors is not the only reason why this year’s Tony has been the talk of the town since Sunday.
Here are the best highlights of the 67th Annual Tony Awards:
1. Kinky Boots as the Big Winner
This year’s Tony showcased the great musical battle between “Matilda the Musical” and “Kinky Boots” for the biggest award of the evening - - the best musical award.
“Kinky Boots” was named the biggest winner of the evening.
But the top major award is not the only one it brought home. Kinky Boots nabbed five more wins. The show even beat out Tom Hanks in the Best Actor category with its very one Billy Porter grabbing the Best Actor Award.
Other awards include: Best Orchestrations, Best Sound Design, Best Choreography, and Best Original Score.
2. Gave Kinky Boots Producer, Cindy Lauper her First Tony
The 67th Annual Tony Awards marks the first Tony for long-time singer and performer Cindy Lauper. The singer received her first Tony award for Best Original Score for Kinky Boots, an adaptation of a cult British film and is best known for its colorful and crow-pleasing element on stage. And to prove judges and fellow stars and fans that they made just the right choice and that she still have it, Cindy wowed the audience of one of her hit song, “True Colors.
3. Offered the Best Awards Opening Show Ever!
Neil Harris just “upped” the level on how any awards show should have its opening number. If indeed, Harris could be the biggest winner of the evening for showing some energy, passion and dedication and too much fun as he was performing, along with many dancers, for the show’s opening production.
NPR quipped that if Oscars have been wondering how to have a great production number to open its every award event, then they should look at how Harris did it.
NPR: “Sure, theater people have an advantage with musical numbers, but if you run the Oscars and can't figure out how to do for and with love of film what the Tony is doing for and with love of theater, you are terrible at your job and should hand it off to someone else.”
4. Had Mike Tyson Dancing
The opening number was so good, it had notorious boxing champ Mike Tyson dancing. The special number was conceptualized by two Tony champions Tom Kitt (“Next to Normal”) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights). And this included the boxing champ. He was among the amazing performers shouting-outs to all the musicals that were nominated this year and for those who have been in Tony’s list through the years.
5. Neil Patrick Harris Has Become the Talk of the Town
Neil Harris has been hosting TONY for years and the 2013 Tony Awards is his fourth year to host the show. This is his year. The 2013 Tony has been marked as his greatest show ever as he dazzled the audience on the show and those watching him from around the world through live streaming.
Neil impressed with his energetic demeanor on the special opening number, fun and witty jokes throughout the show. He sure knows when to pull the punches. The audience gets it. Everyone did. Oscars should really consider him for next year’s Awards ceremony.
