Too Sleazy for an Oscar? Reasons Why Leonardo Di Caprio Should Not Win an Oscar Award for 'Wolf of Wall Street' [VIDEO]
Oscar nominations are just a week away and media is abuzz with actors who could win the most coveted award this year for Best Actor. Leonardo Di Caprio and his portrayal of the greedy yet intelligent stockbroker, Jordon Belfort in "Wolf of Wall Street" is on everyone's lips. The 39-year-old has just won a Golden Globe Award for the Best Actor in a Comical Role. However the "Titanic" actor is looking forward to winning an Oscar this time, which has evaded him till today. Do you see any chances of Leo winning the Best Actor Oscar too? Well we would rather look at reasons why he should not win an Oscar for this movie. Let's find out.
1. History - Leonardo Di Caprio is one fine actor we all know but history has proven that critics do not like him enough. He has been nominated for "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "The Aviator" and "Blood Diamond" but has never been able to win. His acting was superb in all these movies where he has been nominated but still the critics prefer some other actor to him. Will Leo prove lucky this time or will history repeat itself again? Let's wait and watch.
2. Bad Publicity: Maybe Leo is in news for all wrong reasons. "Wolf of Wall Street" is in news not only for being based on a true story but also for portrayal of too much of drugs, nudity and sex scenes. Critics were shocked that a director of the calibre like Martin Scorsese could come up with a movie which could create a buzz for using the most number of F words ever.
"There's nothing exotic or empathetic about a bunch of scheming, loathsome creeps given a whole movie in which to play (again) on our dime. There are no wages of sin on this 'Street' - in fact, it looks like sin pays pretty damned well," writes People magazine. Joe Morgenstern at the Wall Street Journal described the film as "three hours of incessant shouting and sensationally bad behaviour." Would the judges at Oscars consider this bad publicity?
3. Other Fine Actors: Though nominations are yet to be announced, we assume that Leonardo Di Caprio will be pitched against some of the finest actors who too are contending for Oscar. His competition includes Tom Hanks (Captain Philip), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), Robert Redford (All is Lost), Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave). All are fine actors and there is no reason why they cannot win.
4. Academy Screening Did not Go Well: The movie's screening for the critics at Academy Awards did not go too well with one of them writing on her Facebook page some really negative comments about the movie. "..last night was torture at the Academy--"The Wolf Of Wall Street"---three hours of torture--same disgusting crap over and over again---after the film they had a discussion which a lot of us did not stay for--the elevator doors opened and Leonardo D. Martin S. and a few others got out then a screen writer ran over to them and started screaming--shame on you -disgusting," writes 75-year-old actress Hope Holiday, according to Huffington Post.
5. Too Much Criticism: While Leonardo himself is being praised for the movie, the actor admitted to Hollywood reporter that he did not have any control over the critics.
''Of course it would be meaningful [to win an Oscar]. I think everyone wants to be recognised by their peers, absolutely, without question. But the truth of the matter is, you learn very quickly you have absolutely no control of what critics or audiences are going to think. You really just have to do everything you can to make the best film. That's the one thing that I do know," admitted Di Caprio.
Do you think Leo will win an Oscar this time or will the award evade the actor like it has been doing till now? Do watch the Oscars which are set to happen on March 2, 2014 for more action.
