2013 is a great year for watching movies because there were a lot of amazing films that were shown during this time such as "Silver Linings Playbook," "The Great Gatsby," and "Gravity." 1. "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" -

Peter Jackson did it again by breathing fire into the second installment of the film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved children's book "The Hobbit." By introducing new characters such as Tauriel played by Evangeline Lilly of "Lost," it made the film much more diverse, interesting and unpredictable. Plus, seeing familiar faces such as Orlando Bloom who played Legolas in "The Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) trilogy as well as Ian McKellen who played Gandalf and Cate Blanchett who played Galadriel was a treat for the hardcore Tolkien and LOTR fans. Throw in some heart pounding action scenes between dwarves, elves, orcs, a wizard, a necromancer, a hobbit, some very large spiders and a dragon and you have one heck of a blockbuster film. Of course, the ladies will also appreciate the love triangle between a dwarf and two elves.

2. "Silver Linings Playbook" -

This romantic comedy (rom-com) and drama film written and directed by David O. Russell is very entertaining. It certainly helps that it consists of a star-studded and talented cast including Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Julia Stiles. It is based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quick. No wonder Jennifer Lawrence won an Academy Award for Best Actress because of this film. She was a delight to watch and held her own in scenes with the great actor Robert De Niro. And, Bradley Cooper was also a revelation here. Gone are the days of Will Tippin from "Alias." You will laugh, cry and be touched by the scenes in this film.

3. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" -

Jennifer Lawrence has proven that she really is the girl on fire. Aside from being part of the "Silver Linings Playbook," she also turned in a great performance as Katniss Everdeen in the film "Hunger Games: Catching Fire," which is the second installment of "The Hunger Games" trilogy based on the books by Suzanne Collins. This is also an improvement from the first film, which was kind of boring compared to this one. It has more action scenes and a better plot with twists and turns and a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more. There were also a lot of great characters and actors added in this film including Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee and Jena Malone as Johanna Mason.

4. "The Great Gatsby" -

Leonardo DiCaprio + Baz Luhrmann = Great Movie. They did it once in Romeo + Juliet with Claire Danes and they did it again in this brilliant film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel about Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway and Daisy Buchanan. Tobey Maguire as Carraway also turned in a great performance alongside real life friend DiCaprio. Carey Mulligan who played Gatsby's Daisy, was also good, not to mention her fashionable clothes, jewelries and accessories which have spawned numerous copycats during Halloween and Holiday parties.

5. "Frozen" -

This is a truly entertaining computer-animated musical fantasy film from Disney that must be seen not only by the young ones but also the young-at-heart. This features the beautiful voices of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Jonathan Groff. As expected, being Broadway stars, Groff and Menzel sang really well, but Kristen Bell was the biggest surprise of this film! Who knew the girl from "Veronica Mars" and the voice of "Gossip Girl" can sing so well?

6. "Gravity" -

This film is a thrilling space drama starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. The special effects alone will amaze you, but Clooney and Bullock's surprising chemistry on screen will also keep you glued to your seats.

7. "This Is The End" -

This is a really funny comedy featuring an ensemble cast led by Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jonah Hill. It also stars Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Emma Watson of the "Harry Potter" films. It is hilarious because the stars portray fictionalized versions of themselves while making fun of their outrageous Hollywood lifestyle. Then, a global apocalypse strikes when they least expect it and the ensuing chaos unravels for the audience's entertainment.

8. "Zero Dark Thirty" -

This is a critically acclaimed film about the manhunt for al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden after the terrorist attacks in the U.S. on September 11, 2001. It also shows how he was found and eventually killed in a raid in May 2011. Jessica Chastain truly shines in this movie and deserves the Academy Award nomination that she got for the Best Actress category. Unfortunately, she didn't win, but this film officially put her on the map as one of the actresses to watch out for.

9. "Warm Bodies" -

This zombie film is a welcome break from all the vampire movies that were shown in the previous years (i.e. "Twilight"). But, this isn't all gore. It's actually funny and romantic, which are two words you'd never think of to describe a zombie film. But, it's true! This is surprisingly good, like a zombie version of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet."

10. "The Wolverine" -

Wolverine also known as Logan, is one of the most famous X-Men characters and it's nice to see a film that is solely about him. Like the first Wolverine film ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine"), Hugh Jackman reprises his role here. It's interesting to watch Wolverine in Japan battling samurai while suffering from hallucinations of Jean Grey, who died in the film "X-Men: The Last Stand." As usual, it is action-packed, but because it is set in Japan, it makes it all the more interesting.
