'Top of the Lake' Season 2 filming in Sydney and New Zealand; Director Jane Champion surprised at success
Most of the filming of “Top of the Lake” Season 2 will be done in Sydney, but the cast and crew will travel to New Zealand to film some of the scenes. The director of the TV series Jane Campion said in a recent interview that she was surprised by the success of the show, but it gave her an idea that she just had to implement.
Elisabeth Moss will be reprising her role as Detective Robin Griffin. Fans may now get to see more of the character as a part of the filming was done in New Zealand. The filming is expected to take place at the South Island in July. Most of the filming though is already being done in Sydney, Stuff.co.nz reports.
Moss will be joined by Gwendoline Christie, who plays the role of Brienne of Tarth in “Game of Thrones” TV series. There have been rumours that Hollywood star Nicole Kidman will be joining the cast this time around. However, there has been no confirmation of the actress being cast for “Top of the Lake” Season 2 yet.
Sue Affleck, BBC Worldwide Australia and New Zealand communications manager, has confirmed reports of filming taking place in New Zealand in July, but refrained from giving out any more details. “We don't want to spoil the storyline for viewers,” Affleck said in a statement.
The success of the TV series has made it one of the most highly anticipated TV series in Australia. Campion said that the show was never expected to go past the first season, but the success gave her an idea and she felt that she just had to do it.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Campion said that all of the shooting for “Top of the Lake” Season 2 in Sydney has been around the coast. She teased that the next season will begin with Robin Griffin, who is originally from Australia, coming back home in “not really a terrific state.” She will try to build her life again by going back to work.
