Top Six Fun Facts on Disney's Frozen
It may be summer in Australia this month but Aussie kids and Disney fans alike may wish it's already winter with the upcoming premiere of 'Frozen' in theaters Dec. 26.
But before taking the icy plunge on Boxing Day, here are some of the fun facts about Disney's latest feature:
1. Frozen is based on The Snow Queen by Danish fairy tale author Hans Christian Andersen. In the said fairy tale, a young girl saves her friend from a magic mirror and wicked snow queen.
2. Disney has been attempting to adapt the fairy tale, but the story's dark theme does not easily translate into something that the company can produce. That is why it took over a decade before Disney finally came up with this animated feature.
3. Research was a crucial process in pre-production. The animation team went to Wyoming and Canada to observe how ice "behaves," while the production design and art team visited Norway to get inspiration, which resulted to the Norwegian influence all throughout the fictional kingdom of Arendelle.
4. The voice actors behind Frozen's main characters are known for their voices long before their voicing stint. Kristen Bell, who voices Anna, is also known as the voice behind Gossip Girl. On the other hand, Idina Menzel, who voices ice princess Elsa, is best known as Elphaba in the Broadway musical Wicked, and was also seen in the FOX series Glee. Jonathan Groff, who lends his voice to mountain man Kristoff, is also a Broadway actor and was also seen in Glee as Jesse St. James.
5. The filmmakers brought in a real reindeer into the Walt Disney Animation Studios. The animators then observed the reindeer's appearance and mannerisms, which was then used to create Kristoff's reindeer Sven.
6. Before watching Frozen, moviegoers will also get to see Get a Horse, an animated short which uses a mix of old and new animation techniques. Director Lauren MacMullan worked with the studio's most talented people to create something that looks like it was made in the 1920's. "Something that Walt (Disney) & Ub (Iwerks) would have put together, back when everything was done on deadline and Disney Studios didn't have a whole lot of time or money to spend on the production of these shorts," she says.
