A tornado classified as an EF1 twister ripped through the town of New Tecumseth in Ontario, Canada, topping down hydro lines and trees. Environment Canada said its maximum winds were between 135 and 175 kilometres per hour. Reports of fatalities have yet to be received.

The twister damaged 18 properties, according to New Tecumseth Fire Chief Dan Heydon.

Ontario Provincial Police Const. Paul Nancekivell told CBC News the badly damaged home had "its roof torn off, part of the second floor has caved in. The back of a garage was also torn off by the storm."

Environment Canada said the twister struck 3:30 pm in the 15th Side Road and 4th Line area.

"A cluster of strong to severe thunderstorms developed ahead of a cold front. A tornado has been confirmed from this event," the national weather agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

Teresa Greco, a resident from Tottenham, told CTV News the tornado was horrifying. "The way it started picking up, it's like Wizard of Oz honestly," she said. "With the amount of debris that was floating around that's the kind of scene that was happening."

She was driving at the time the twister showed up. "I'm like, 'Oh my god what's happening?' and then all of a sudden it hit down at this barn right over there and then it picked up the roof and then large pieces of metal were flying around being kicked out and then being pulled up," she says. "And then I'm like, 'Oh my god it's coming right towards me.'"

On Tuesday, another Ontario town, Angus, was struck by an EF-2 tornado, damaging over 100 homes and injuring three people.
