Residents who were forced to leave a Nebraska village leveled by a tornado that killed a child and injured more than two dozen people began returning on Tuesday to salvage belongings from their battered homes, businesses, a church and school. A tornado has ripped through the central Ontario community of Angus on Tuesday after even as the area was in the midst of a severe thunderstorm alert.

Located 100 kilometres north of Toronto, at least 20 to 30 homes in the Angus community sustained "significant damage," including blown windows, torn fences and ripped roofs on their homes.

No one was reportedly hurt from the storm.

"I think people are very shocked by what has happened, which is totally understandable. They are relieved that nobody's hurt besides scratches and things like that," Coun. Keith White told The Canadian Press.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Peter Leon told CBC News authorities are now conducting house-to-house inspections to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for.

"The primary focus right now is addressing those homes where we have individuals that could be still in a residence - we want to make sure that nobody's trapped."

Keith inspected the community and saw dangling tree branches, fence planks and other debris littering the driveways of many homes as well as blocking roads.

"I see furniture, shingles, wood, trees, damage to vehicles," he said. "Right now I'm standing looking at a moving truck, a double-axle moving truck, which was on a driveway and now its side on the lawn and driveway next door."

Tina Forget was driving home along with her kids just ahead of the storm's arrival in Angus when she saw how it whipped one house. "I arrived at this house about five minutes before it did what it did, so I was on the road with my kids just before this," Forget told CBC News.

"It was coming pinpoint to the house and then sort of I guess blew off a little bit to the left and just missed us. And it was just really, really frightening," Forget said.

The storm toppled power lines making electricity down in much of the area. It is not known when the electricity could be restored.
