Toronto Mayor Admits Purchasing Illegal Drugs
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has confessed that he did purchase illegal drugs in the last couple of years. This was one of the most stunning moments in the city council meeting where Mr Ford was asked to take a leave of absence for dealing with his personal problems, CBC News reports.
Coun Denzil Minnan-Wong asked Mr Ford if the latter had zero tolerance of gangs, drugs and guns. The mayor replied affirmatively. Coun Minnan-Wong is responsible for sponsoring the council motion which instructs the mayor to step aside, ask for an apology and cooperate with the cops. He further asked the mayor if he purchased illegal drugs in the last couple of years, and Mr Ford took a long pause. Then he confessed that he did purchase illegal drugs.
Mr Ford further clarified that he was humiliated by that, but he could not change the past. He can only move on and that is what he is doing, he said. The meeting had such dramatic moments. On the other hand, things became even more intense when Coun Minnan-Wong accused Mr Ford of standing in front of him in a 'threatening' way during the debate. He said that Mr Ford deliberately stood quite close to him. There was a recess for five minutes after shouting and heckling took place.
According CBC News, Speaker Frances Nunziata asked the mayor to apologise after the five-minute recess. Even though the mayor was not ready to apologise at first as he refused to be wrongly accused of threatening Coun Minnan-Wong in any manner. He said that he did not threaten Coun Minnan-Wong in any form. He just asked him to 'take his seat', he said. He further said that he had nothing to say sorry for.
Coun Michael Thompson asked the mayor about him being photographed in an alleged crack-house. Mr Ford said that it was not a crack house as a family lived there. He was also questioned about the online video which showed him threatening to kill a guy in an agitated way. The mayor admitted that he had done such things in an extremely intoxicated state.
