Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Australia announced today that they have initiated a safety recall on its top-selling HiLux ute.

The recall involves 116,507 four-wheel-drive petrol and turbo-diesel HiLux vehicles produced between January 2005 and February 2010 for the Australian market. Hilux two-wheel-drive vehicles are not affected.

"In remote areas in the vehicle is frequently driven at hard acceleration on rough roads that feature conditions such as severe corrugations or high numbers of cattle grid crossings the rear tailshaft centre bearing support brackets may give way," said Toyota Australia media and communications manager Laura Hill.

According to the company, only 19 cases of the condition have been reported in Australia and there were no injuries associated with this incident. "This safety recall is a preventative action and owners can continue to drive their vehicles."

Toyota Australia said it will contact affected owners to advise them to make an appointment with their preferred Toyota Dealer. This recall activity will be conducted free of charge.

The latest HiLux recall is the biggest for Toyota Australia recently, but the company is adamant it is putting customers first.

"Toyota Australia continues to focus on quality as a major priority," says Hill. "Our customers can be assured we will always place customer safety and service first."

Behind the Holden Commodore, the HiLux is the second best-selling vehicle in the country.
