'Train to Busan': Hollywood film companies fighting over remake rights for South Korean zombie film
South Korean zombie film “Train to Busan” is reportedly going to have a Hollywood remake. The interest for this Asian zombie film has been making rounds on social media, and now it’s sparking a bidding war from numerous Hollywood production companies.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Contents Panda, the handler of ‘Train to Busan"s’ sale, confirmed the interest of numerous companies bidding for the rights to remake the zombie thriller.
"Several major Hollywood studios as well as top French and European companies have made inquiries about remake rights, with some even making offers," senior manager Danny Lee of Contents Panda said. "There has been a lot of interest since the film received positive reviews at the Cannes Film Festival in May."
Among some of the production companies the news outlet identified are Gaumont, Canal Plus, EuropaCorp, Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox.
Danny Lee declined to reveal the official number and names of production companies interested in remaking “Train to Busan.” For now he said that the film is doing great in the local box office hence their side is in no rush to make official deals yet.
“Train to Busan” hops on the zombie-themed movies but Korean director Yeon Sang Ho has reportedly managed to make his own zombie film masterpiece. According to The Straits Times, “Train to Busan” is an action-packed movie that delivers intense suspense given how the film’s rendition of zombies move and repopulate so fast.
Metro also compared this South Korean zombie film with popular series “The Walking Dead,” stating that zombies in “Train to Busan” is “truly spine-tingling,” making TWD seem peaceful in comparison.
“Train to Busan” tells the story of divorced workaholic Seok Woo (Gong Yoo) who takes his daughter Su An (Kim Soo An) from Seoul to Busan to visit her mother as a birthday gift. What started as a simple train ride, however, turned into chaos when an outbreak of virus started turning passengers into zombies.
