Trains Collide in Switzerland, Killing Driver & Injuring 36
Another Train Accident in Europe
Thirty five people have been injured as a result if a collission between two trains in Switzerland. The incident took place Monday evening local time.
Five of those injured are in critical condition, said police.
Reports say that one of the drivers involved in the accident has not been found and is believed to be in the wreckage at Granges-près-Marnand, said police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel.
"These are regional trains. The speeds are a little lower and even if one deeply regrets the likely loss of life of one person as well as five serious injuries, the situation could have been much more catastrophic," Sauterel was quoted as saying in a report by Reuters.
He added that the cause of the accident was still unclear.
While one of those injured was flown to the hospital in Lausanne. Others with minor injuries were taken care of by paramedics or transported
taken by ambulance.
Approximately 40 people were believed to have occupied the two trains. One was travelling to Lausanne, while the secpnd tran was on its way to Payerne.
The tragic collission comes on the heels of a Spanish train derailment last week that killed seventy-nine people and injured scores of passengers. It was one of the worst train disasters in the history of Spain.
The driver of train that derailed near San Diago, a Catholic pilgrim town, admitted he was careless and speeding while going on a bent. He was released on bail after a charge of 79 counts of homicide.
After the train accident, the driver said he 'wanted to die,' BBC News reported.
