Transfer News: Manchester United and Liverpool on alert as Borussia Dortmund midfielder admits doubt over his future
Borussia Dortmund’s box-to-box midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has admitted of his uncertainty in signing a new contract with the German club, fuelling speculations of English Premier League (EPL)’s Manchester United and Liverpool interest.
The 25-year-old Gundogan has been playing for Dortmund since 2011. The German had hinted of leaving the football club after former manager Jurgen Klopp’s exit.
"No decision has been taken yet and of course everything has to be thought through because the length of one's career is limited," Gundogan told to German newspaper BILD. Gundogan has also suggested that the next contract he signs will be longer and not for a year.
Gundogan has had a successful career with Dortmund. He won the Bundesliga and German Cup double in 2012 and also scored in the Champions League final defeat against Bayern Munich in 2013.
Gundogan has featured 16-times for the German national team. He missed the opportunity of playing in the 2014 FIFA World Cup due to a back injury, which sidelined him for over a year.
Gundogan’s contract with Dortmund ends at the end of the 2016-17 season. With one more year left in his contract, uncertainty regarding the midfielder has risen and with his recent statement. Speculations suggest that the German is on his way out of Dortmund.
Dortmund currently lies second in the Bundesliga and if they want to receive any transfer fee for Gundogan, they have to sell him by the end of this season since the midfielder will become a free agent in 2017.
Liverpool is considered as the likely destination of Gundogan since the Merseyside club is coached by the former Dortmund manager Klopp. Gundogan has a very good relationship with Klopp and it won’t be surprising to see the midfielder re-uniting with his former boss at Anfield.
Meanwhile, Manchester United has also been linked with Italian club Lazio winger Felipe Anderson. The Brazilian has publicly stated of his desire to move to Old Trafford.
“My future? I don’t know if I’ll stay in January. I’m focused on my work because I live in a good moment but I don’t know what will happen.” Anderson said, as reported by The Telegraph.
