After a disastrous start in the Premier League season with a defeat to Swansea, Manchester United would be the busiest club during the transfer window. Louis van Gaal has clearly stated that he needs to invest on quality players. Manchester United chairman, Ed Woodward, is under tremendous pressure from fans and former players to open his checkbook and spend generously in order to bring back life to the United ranks.
It was on the cards. The pre season triumphs made false illusions among the fans, but these couldn't last until the first game of the season. The club needs a system. It needs quality midfielders and some strong defenders. The game against Swansea proved that the ball wasn't pushed up the pitch regularly. With so many legends of the club calling for some reinforcements, United's management would want to start following that advice as soon as possible.
In terms of possible signings, we can safely say that Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind are all but done. Considering many different aspects of their game, the winger and the centre back have performed well in the world cup finals. Mehdi Benatia is also the talking point for Chelsea and United fans this week as the Roma star sets his eyes on a premier league debut.
Louis van Gaal has emphasized he wants to assess all the players closely to make sure everyone gets pre-season minutes. However, now that he has made clear who he wants to continue for the team in the future, he must have realized he is lacking a star man in the mid field. This player must be capable of passing balls to the star studded forward line. Juan Mata, who is an attacking midfielder, would want support from the back to play an open game.
Whatever cards Louis van Gaal and Woodward are going to play remain to be seen. However, it is extremely clear that Old Trafford wants at least four transfers to liven up fans' expectations. With less than nine days remaining to the end of the transfer window, here are some potential options for Van Gaal to look at.
Midfield is certainly a point of concern for Manchester United. They would want to strengthen the wings to stretch the play wide. Arda Turan, the Turkish born winger, is on the hot list of Manchester United this season. Desperation for wins and added pressure from the fans can bring him to Old Trafford.ReutersThough he has been linked with Liverpool and Arsenal, Manchester United must have felt the need of a striker following the injury of Robin van Persie. As Rooney has been given the extra responsibility of leading the club, there will be a need to rest him at some point in the season. Cavani provides just the right options. ReutersThere is something to like about Van Gaal's 3-5-2, it worked for the Dutch big time. However, they would need to have three very strong central defenders to make it work and Mats Hummels could be one of them. He has been on United's radar as a potential transfer but he has negated the rumors time and again.
