Trucking group bats for dual-runs to improve freight services
A transport group said on Thursday that enabling trucking companies to implement the dual-run system would lead to better profits, slashed costs and less travel time for the freight industry as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) instructed DP World Australia and Patrick to set up a blue print on the trucking scheme.
The WA Transport Forum, through its representative Tom Mourne said that dual-runs advantages would translate to efficient trucking operations as companies are allowed to drop-off and then pick-up freights at Fremantle port within the same travel route.
Mr Mourne said that companies' additional savings from the system would be passed on to consumers, specifying that "if a carrier is able to have to two customers, one an import and the other an export customer, and he makes one truck movement to service each customers, he's halving his costs."
He said that the system is the future pathway for the freight transport business as he stressed that once fully implemented, dual-runs could actually contribute in reducing the motor vehicles travelling on Australian roads.
And as for specific truck movements, Mr Mourne said that the system should mean "less congestion, more improved transport and efficient transport arrangements, and therefore hopefully lower costs and more profitability for those involved in the chain."
