"True Detective" Season 1 Episode 7 "After You've Gone" kicked off with the scenes from present day. Two detectives Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Cohle (Mathew McConaughey) are in the bar in 2012, meeting each other for the first time in a decade. First few moments reveal what Cohle and Hart were up to ever since they parted ways in 2002. After spending sometime in Alaska, Cohle returned to the place and began working on the unsolved case on it all by himself. He has his clues and evidences stored in a cold storage.
He takes Hart to the cold storage and it appears Cohle has spent a lot of time unraveling the mystery. There are maps related to the missing people and drawings of "The Yellow King," "black stars" and Carcosa. He has gathered lots of data that could lead them to the end of the road uncovering the murder mystery. During his quest, Cohle also found a former student belonging to one of the programs at Well Spring. He dishes out some information on seeing the scarred man.
Cohle also suggests that Billy Lee's cousin Senator Eddie Tuttle could be involved, hinting at his heightened interest in Dora Lange's murder case. Cohle tries to convince that it may not be just one person's involvement it could be a group of people.
He insists on Tuttle family's involvement and admits that he broke into his house and found some pictures and video tapes in the same, of children blindfolded and wearing antlers. He shows the video tape to Hart, which is so extreme that he has to turn it off before it is over. Cohle then reveals that the girl in the video tape is Mary Fontenot who went missing, earlier.
Cohle also tries to convince that he did not kill Billy Lee. He believes it was the community people who may have got to him after finding out the things went missing from Tuttle family's safe.
Later, Hart pays a visit to his ex-wife Maggie in her new home after they got separated. He wants to know about the investigation. He also reveals that he would be helping Cohle in the case he was working all by himself, until now.
Hart retrieves some old files related to the case and find out about Reggie Ledoux's cousin Jimmy. Cohle and Hart visit Jimmy who discloses he has seen the man with scared face. After Jimmy, they visit Sam Tuttle's female employee. On being investigated, the woman revealed that one of Sam's grandchildren had scars on his face, given to him by his child's father only. Further investigating, Cohle shows the woman some evidence he collected which freaks her out and she asks if he knows "Carcosa." She starts jabbering "death is not the end." But they are asked to put a halt to their investigation and leave by the woman's daughter.
Furthermore, Cohle and Hart dig deeper into Marie Fontenot's case. They figure a former co-worker Steve Geraci worked on the case. Steve Geraci who is reluctant to dish out any information is forced at the gunpoint by Cohle and Hart to tell them the truth.
In the end of "True Detective" Season 1 Episode 7 "After You've Gone," fans are left with a major cliffhanger when the scene jumps to the present day detectives Papania and Gilbough hunt for the church mentioned by Russ. They stumble upon on a man who Cohle and Hart interrogated before. They ask him for directions to the church and he says that the church doesn't exist anymore. The man says that he knows the area since his family has been "here for a long, long time." The two detectives fail to pay attention to what the man is doing in the lawn. The man is cutting the grass in circular pattern and has scars on his face.
